Privacy policy

Who we are

Anyone for Tennis is a service that helps people on the Sunshine Coast find someone to play a sport or activity with. We are based in Australia and we handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

What we collect

We collect only what the service needs to work. Specifically:

• Your email address, so you can sign in and we can notify you. Signing in uses a link sent to your email — we never ask for or store a password.
• A display name, which we deliberately limit to your first name and last initial.
• The suburb you want to play in, and how far you are willing to travel.
• What you want to play: the activity, format, level, days, time of day, and any note you write.
• Messages you send to other members through the site.
• Whether a game was played, and any private rating you leave afterwards.
• Reports and blocks you submit, so we can keep the service safe.
• Basic technical information such as your IP address, needed to serve the site and to apply rate limits that prevent abuse.

What we deliberately do not collect

Some of the most useful privacy protection is in what never gets stored at all.

• We do not collect or store phone numbers. If you choose to share one in a message, that is your decision and it is visible only to the person you send it to.
• We do not collect street addresses. When you set a location we only accept suburbs and named public venues, and we reject anything that looks like a street address.
• We do not store your precise location. A listing is stored at the centre of the suburb you chose, shifted by a small random offset of up to 300 metres. This keeps distances useful while making sure a listing never points at where anyone lives.
• We never show another member your coordinates. Other people see an approximate distance and a suburb name, and nothing more.
• We do not accept photo uploads, so we never hold images of you.
• We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.

Where your information is stored

Our application and database are hosted in Singapore. This means your personal information is stored outside Australia.

We tell you this plainly because Australian privacy law treats sending personal information overseas as a disclosure that you are entitled to know about. Storing it overseas does not reduce our responsibility: we remain accountable for how it is handled, and we take reasonable steps to ensure the providers we use protect it to a comparable standard.

We store it in Singapore because our hosting provider does not offer an Australian region. If that changes, or if we move providers, we will update this policy.

Who else handles your information

We use a small number of service providers to run the site. Each receives only what it needs, and none of them is permitted to use your information for their own purposes.

• Our hosting and database provider, in Singapore. This is where your account, listings and messages are stored.
• A network and domain protection provider, which handles traffic to the site, including your IP address, across a global network.
• An email delivery provider in the United States, which receives your email address in order to send you sign-in links and notifications.
• A mapping provider in the United States, which turns the suburb name you type into a map location. It receives the search text, not your identity or your account.

How we use it

We use your information to match you with other people looking to play, to let you contact them without either of you exposing personal contact details, to send you the notifications you have asked for, and to keep the service safe from abuse.

Every category of email we send has its own unsubscribe. Turning off notifications never affects your ability to use the site.

What other members can see

Your listings are public — that is the point of the service, and search engines may index them. A listing shows your first name and last initial, your activity and level, the suburb, an approximate distance, your chosen days and time of day, and any note you wrote.

Your email address is never shown to other members. Ratings you leave after a game are never shown publicly; they are visible only to us, and only for moderation.

Keeping it and deleting it

Listings expire automatically at the end of the last day you chose, and expired listings stop appearing in search.

You can ask us to delete your account at any time, and we will. Listings and messages that other people were part of are anonymised rather than removed outright, so their side of a conversation still makes sense to them.

We may keep a limited record of reports and blocks after deletion where we need it to protect other members from harm.

Keeping it secure

Traffic to and from the site is encrypted in transit. We do not store passwords at all, because we do not use them — sign-in is by emailed link. Access to the production database is restricted to the application and to administrators who need it.

No service can promise perfect security. If a breach ever occurs that is likely to cause you serious harm, we will notify you and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner as the law requires.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it if it is wrong, or ask us to delete it. Email us and we will respond within a reasonable time, normally within 30 days.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first so we can try to fix it. If you are still unsatisfied, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.

Age

This service is for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have, we will delete it.

Changes

If we change how we handle personal information, we will update this page and change the date at the top. If the change is significant, we will tell you by email.
